BIRDS
BIRDS
The Bird series was inspired by images I saw of the Martin Brothers' "Wally Birds".They were humidors in the form of birds, monkeys and dogs. With humanlike expressions they were considered political caricatures.
The Martin Brothers were in England in the late 1800's.The work was salt glazed and amazingly complicated forms were achieved.
After making the first few, a raven, crow and others, I began making birds by request on commission. In research I discovered the forms that Minton majolica made and the Great White Heron water ewer, shown below, was inspired by that. My work is stoneware, which is fired higher and a much more durable clay than the earthenwares.
These are only some in the complete series and all in private collections except the second Rooster which is available.
The sculptures range from aprx 10" tall to 18"- 20".
This Bald Eagle Jar is holding an Olive Branch.
